REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT KIBALE NATIONAL PARK
Also known as the primate capital of the world, Kibale National Park is about 299kms west of Kampala in the direction of the Rwenzori Mountains.
It was christined the primate capital of the world because it is home to chimpanzees and 13 other different species of monkeys such as the blue monkeys, black and white colobus monkey, red colobus monkey, red tailed monkey, l’hoest’s monkey, baboons and bush babies.
The chimpanzee population is estimated to be about 500 which makes chimpanzee tracking one of Kibale’s unique experiences.
While you track the chimpanzees, you also get the opportunity to get close to them and study them up-close.
Chimps are said to have 98.4% human qualities which makes their activities more those of humans.
They live together in communities and are governed by one dominate male who has to challenge other males in the community so as to take up a leadership role.
Kibale has about five chimp communities two of which are habituated for purposes of tourism.
The park also boosts of its good climate, various bird species – numbering about 350 spicies in addition to butterflies, not forgetting its unique tree species which form big canopies.
You can also enjoy night walks, nature walks and chimp habituation.
Kibale national park is not just a unique tourism destination but is also becoming a source of income and development in the region.
It hosts an average of about 14,000 visitors in a year, 95% of whom are foreign visitors.
According to Nelson Guma, the chief warden of Kibale conservation area, chimpanzee tracking alone raises about Shs 5bn a year which is shared between Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the communities neighbouring the park.
This park falls under the Kibale Conservation Area which is a mother to four protected areas which include the Kibale forest which covers about 795km, Semiliki which covers 220sqkm, katonga wildlife reserve which is 210sqkm and the 542 Tooro Semiliki wildlife reserve.
